I Didn't Know I was So Poor !
They said I was so poor.
I always wore designer clothes
and slept on designer sheets.
On my legs were a pair of cotton hose.
A pair of Brogan shoes on my feet.
I didn't know I was so poor.
My undies said "Tifton, Georgia Fertilizer Co 5-10-15."
Mama stitched up everything on the Singer sewing machine.
We invented recycling for more living power.
Our fields were always pretty and green.
I didn't know I was so poor.
My food was always fresh and delicious.
Peas, corn, okra, tomatoes, and beans,
Mama cooked the most beautiful dishes,
including shanty man bread and collard greens.
In our smoke house hung a variety of meats.
Hams, sausage, sides of bacon, fat and lean.
Smoked fish, hog ears, pig tails and feet
I didn't know I was so poor!
